Hand grenades are relatively difficult to obtain, being controlled items in many countries. So, terrorist groups, other criminals and biker gangs, often resort to making their own.

Some are completely improvised, while others use the fuze housing and safety lever from practice and training grenades that have been refurbished by machining, hand-fitting and filling with homemade delay element mixtures. The grenade bodies may also be improvised, and often contain improvised high explosives or black powder.
