Non-electric detonators are designed to be initiated by a length of safety fuse, inserted into the open end, and crimped in place with a special pliers called a cap crimper. The safety fuse provides a time delay of an average of 45 seconds per foot (timing measured at sea level). The fuse is ignited by a match, or a fuse lighter designed for the purpose. Most non-electric detonators are manufactured with an aluminum shell or a copper shell. They come in various lengths ranging from 1-1/2 inches to 4 inches and a variety of types are shown here. There are also plastic shelled detonators made in China. The shell contains a flash charge that ignites when the safety fuse burns to the end and spits out a flame. Further down below the flash charge are one or two other extremely powerful charges, one being a “primary” charge and the other is a “base charge”. The non-electric detonator is inserted into a less sensitive main charge explosive such as dynamite or plastic explosive, and it “initiates” the shock wave through the main charge, making it detonate.
