They explode after a short delay when the fuse burns into the contained powder charge. They come in various lengths and diameters-- the tiniest being “lady fingers”. Most are made in China.

Some are made in the USA; many are illegally manufactured in small home workshops using unauthorized explosive charges (such as powdered metals and chlorates), in unlicensed factories.

Fireworks are larger pyrotechnic devices that have colored flames, and often launch flaming “stars” into the sky, or star shells that explode at a particular height and throw burning “stars” in all directions.
