Arming Devices and Systems

Many types of explosive devices (both improvised and manufactured for use in military “ordnance” items), contain a single device or a system that temporarily blocks detonation. It is referred to as an arming device if it is a single component or arming system if it is multiple components.

Arming devices may be set to initiate/detonate the explosive (“become armed” and thus on standby) manually, or by some other means, such as time delay.

The various mechanical, electrical, electronic and chemical devices we offer in our inert product line clearly demonstrate to students how arming devices work and the hazards inherent in many of the improvised types.

CLOTHESPIN/CIGARETTE DELAY

Clothespin/cigarette delay. Clothespin is modified into electrical switch, which closes as twine burns through from cigarette.

MOUSETRAP/SOLDER DELAY

Mousetrap/solder delay. Same principle as ITA-98. However, this device uses a powerful torsion spring that can close a switch as well as fire a percussion-initiated bomb.

ELECTRONIC DELAYED ARMING, RADIO-CONTROLLED IED
Order Sku: ITA-102
Electronic delayed arming, radio-controlled IED. This device is a modified command detonation bomb model which can not be detonated at the exact instant the joystick control is operated. The joystick control simply starts an electronic automatic arming sequence. This is a safety feature to prevent (or at least attempt to thwart) electronic countermeasures jamming by a scanning transmitter moving up and down the radio frequency channels. Once the firing sequence has been started by the bomber, the bomb will detonate only after the electronic arming delay has set itself; the delay is variable and is set by us at the factory to the user’s request (typically 8-10 seconds to thwart a sweep by E.C.M. equipment). Transmitter is handheld, portable, with range variable from 1/4 mile to 1 mile. Receiver uses dual servos for redundancy, contains detonator and simulated dynamite or plastic explosive, LED, and whistle.

Transceiver Initiated IED in Box - Radio-controlled command detonation IED, with dual servo motors for redundancy. Same basic unit as ITA-102, but without automatic electronic arming features. Manual arming only. In all other respects, identical to ITA-102. All batteries supplied for transmitter and receiver in both ITA-102 and ITA-103.

In operation, smoke or dust particles blown into the sensing chamber, cause a change in resistance. This is then translated by circuitry to output a detonating signal.

LIGHT LEVEL RISING - LIGHT SENSITIVE IED

Operates on the change in light intensity. Unit uses a light-sensitive photocell which produces a constant electrical resistance.

When light intensity is increased, resistance is changed and the detonator is initiated.
