Security Poster: Terrorist Limpet Mines

Terrorists have used magnetically-attached mines for the past 30 years to destroy vehicles, boats and infrastructure with steel underpinnings and supports.
This poster illustrates three types of “LIMPET” mines, that have been primarily manufactured for use by naval special underwater sabotage teams, but have come into the hands of terrorists.
The mines are small and lightweight, containing a time delay mechanical fuze, (“time pencil”) which operates silently, initiating a detonator and a high explosive charge.
These mines have very powerful magnets, enabling them to be attached to heavily rusted, barnacle-encrusted steel surfaces.
The Russian SPM mine shown is the largest, and comes with a “keeper” plate attached to the magnets. It also has two slots that allow a belt pass through for easy transport of several of them on a person’s body. Keeper plates are discarded when the mines are deployed. This mine’s time delay fuze offers a delay ranging between 5 minutes and of 823 hours, depending on ambient water temperature and the lead delay strip chosen.
Terrorists have also made improvised magnetic limpet mines. In a number of instances, they have driven on motorcycles, attaching limpet mines to targeted VIP vehicles to assassinate the occupants.
