Simulated Poison Gas I.E.D.

Everyone is aware of the subway bombing in Tokyo, Japan, using a poison gas device which injured over 5,000 in one incident. In response to the resulting numerous requests from military and law enforcement agencies around the world for a small portable simulator to imitate the effects of a poison gas improvised explosive device, Securesearch, Inc. has developed the SG-l00 training aid.

This training aid contains a generator of acrid white smoke, with a programmable electronic timer that can allow for up to 7 events over a 7-day period. The generator pump operates on a 1.5 volt battery and the timer operates on its own 1.5 volt battery, thus it is not dependent on a line cord or wall plug (mains power point) for operation and may be placed anywhere during a training exercise. The device is contained in a 5” x 7-3/4” x 2-1/2” metal housing with the programmable electronic timer mounted on its top cover plate.

It is supplied with 12 glass smoke tester tubes of the type used in ventilation studies. One tube is used for each training exercise. Extra tubes are readily available. The tubes contain stannic chloride and upon activation they produce a volume of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and tin compounds. The hydrogen chloride is mildly irritating to the eyes and lungs as are the tin compounds. It is strongly recommended that self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), gloves and eye protection be worn during training exercises as the fumes from hydrogen chloride produce an acid mist which is corrosive to all human tissue. The emitted tin compounds are also irritating to eyes, skin and mucous membranes due to acidity.

Toxicity levels (TLV):

  • HCI = 5 ppm ceiling

  • Tin compounds = 2 mg/cubic meter as tin

Prolonged inhalation of HCl gas concentrations moderately above the TLV can damage the teeth and irritate nasal passages. Inhalation of higher concentrations, above 50 ppm for a short period of time can cause choking and coughing and produce severe irritation and damage to the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The NIOSH recommended IDLH level is 100 ppm. This is why protective devices and apparel are mandatory for all personnel during training exercises.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available from Securesearch, Inc. for the smoke tubes.
