Explosive
simulants are chemical formulations or other products used to mimic many aspects
of commercial, military and improvised explosives. Simulants are used in
training, testing and detection exercises of many types, where a totally safe
substitute is needed.
Securesearch
explosive simulant Ex-L-Ex-“A” comes in several different formulations. It
is hot cast into molds of various dimensions. Once it has hardened, it is
capable of simulating:
-
Dynamite
-
cast
TNT demolition blocks
-
pressed
TNT
-
Composition
B demolition blocks
-
C4
demolition blocks and Semtex-H blocks
In
thinner cast strips, sandwiched between layers of thin, rigid material, it will
simulate sheet explosive such as Detasheet and Flex-X.
This
product is relatively inexpensive, compared to Kynar and similar polyvinylidene
fluoride (PVDF) plastics.
It
can be supplied in rods, square and rectangular blocks, thin sheets and most
other shapes. These shapes can be machined and can be drilled with a detonator
well for insertion of an inert detonator in explosives detection exercises. The
simulant can be supplied colored to match common explosives. It can also be
supplied wrapped and labeled in the format of most military demolition blocks.

Ex-L-Ex-“A”
has been tested by the Canadian Government on color and black and white x-ray
systems and has been found to give an excellent
representation of the explosives described above. Several formulations have also
been tested in England on a wide variety of X-Ray equipment and in all cases
have been found to provide excellent imaging characteristics of live explosives.
Securesearch,
Inc.
also makes a range of over 300 other inert training aids for use in
explosive recognition training courses and for training in render-safe
procedures.
